Plus tard, il y aura celles de CORNO (1952-2016), peintre québécoise qui a fait carrière à New York qui, elle-même, a fortement été influencée par l’iconographie d’Andy Warhol. Her characters express a part of light and shadow, like two sides of the same coin. They are never totally in full light, nor are they ever totally in full darkness. It is a metaphor for life, a human reality that she transposes into her painting which combines abstract and figurative details. Her work is built as much around the colours as the texture and movement that she gives to her subjects or topics. Therefore, the artist immediately seeks some balance through a certain intensity. Her characters are painted in acrylic and in mixed media. She also uses mortar and epoxy, she also integrates elements that help to produce a particular texture or relief. She works just as well with a painting knife (spatula) as with a (paint) brush. “I share my passion for making the world happy ! », says the artist who takes life one day at a time, one step at a time.

From childhood, DUMONT was nourished by images, including those of Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Later, there will be those of CORNO (1952-2016), a Quebec painter who made a career in New York City who, herself, was strongly influenced by the iconography of Andy Warhol. DUMONT is inspired above all by looks and forms in close-up, such as the mouth, for example, which is a very important element in her artistic iconography. The attention of the public is fixed on an element highlighted in her composition. This element evokes memories or provokes emotions. For example, an ultra pulpy mouth, placed at the heart of a composition will not leave anyone indifferent. Could there be a provocative intention behind that mouth? A seductive intention? Or quite simply a pretext for questioning for a public too accustomed to situating women as an agent of seduction?

The portrait is not new, but regardless of its functions throughout the history of art, the common motive is recognition: to recognize the individual in the image. Here, the artist uses the portrait as the cornerstone of a thought of representation articulated on the notions of imitation, resemblance and personality traits. The image refers to the individual it looks like. What echoes do we perceive, in ourselves, of these portraits?

The art of DUMONT is also to question our perception of ourselves, the perception of others and… the perception of women.

Artistic approach written by HeleneCaroline Fournier, art expert and art theorist, specialist writer, art critic.
